
A cold breeze hits your arm and the hairs stand up.
A horror film does the same thing.
Then a piece of music reaches exactly the right moment and, somehow, your skin reacts as if Hans Zimmer has personally opened a freezer door.

Tiny muscles are pulling your hairs upright
Each hair follicle has a tiny smooth muscle attached to it called the arrector pili.
When your sympathetic nervous system activates the response, those muscles contract. The hairs are pulled more upright and the surrounding skin puckers.
